In the Bismarck archipelago to the east of New Guinea, people make fire with the simplest of all the friction techniques - the fire plough. They work as a pair - one person ploughs while the other nurtures the friction dust into an ember with his fingertips. This photo captures the magical moment of ignition. He has traded his own physical energy for the blessing of fire.
